    President's Letter June 2020

    Dear Member,

Trust you and your loved ones are keeping safe.

I am pleased to advise that the Club has a new Committee Member and Treasurer, Professor Patrick McGorry A.O.  Professor McGorry, who was appointed at the recent Committee of Management Meeting, has an impressive list of achievements, and is currently Executive Director of Orygen and Professor of Youth Mental Health at Melbourne University.  I have attached a C.V. of Professor McGorry, which gives more details of his experience and considerable achievements.

I am sure that all Members will welcome Professor McGorry to the Committee at this exciting time for our Club.

We now have before us an excellent opportunity, in what is a very good Market to acquire a suitable premise that will serve the needs of our Club, now and into the future.  As I mentioned in my previous letter to Members, the Committee of Management [C.O.M.] will seek expert advice from within our Membership, and beyond, to determine the best way forward.  Details of a proposed process in this regard will be sent to Members in the near future, at which time we [the C.O.M.] would be pleased to receive feedback from Members before a final decision is made.

We are using the current shutdown of most of our activities as an opportunity for strategic planning, and to review and improve our financial and management structures to make them more effective, efficient and Member friendly. When we are safely able to do so, we will have a Meeting of Members to discuss and review the options of how our Club should develop.  Fortunately, our excellent financial position [$17 million in cash and no debts] gives the Club many favourable options. It is interesting to reflect that the sale of our rundown Queen Street premises [$2.5 million in debt, with years of successive operational losses and urgently in need of repair and refurbishment] a few years ago, has ensured the future of our Club.  Had Members not voted to sell,  the current virus induced shut down would have been the “coup de grace’ for the Celtic Club.  The Celtic Club would then have joined the long list of Community Clubs in Australia that have gone bankrupt in recent years.

I would also like to take this opportunity to bring to your attention the recently published book by Club Member, Mary Healy, Heffernan of the Shamrock.  I congratulate Mary on her book, and wish her every success in its promotion.  Further details of Heffernan of the Shamrock and the interesting story it tells are attached.

I look forward to meeting you all again when this crisis has passed, as it surely will.  In the meantime, keep well.

    Regards,

    Brian Shanahan O.A.M.

    President Celtic Club.
