    International Irish Famine Commemoration, and 20th Annual Melbourne Famine Commemoration

    Commemoration of the Great Irish Famine and the arrival of Irish Orphan Girls

    Sunday 28th October 2018, 2.30pm-4pm

    Famine Rock Burgoyne Reserve,The Strand (Cnr Stevedore St), Williamstown
    There will be live music from 2pm

    Guest Speaker:  Patrick O'Donovan TD,
    Minister of State representing the Government of Ireland

    Music:  Vince Brophy, Cora Browne, Felix Meagher and others

    Ceremony includes the opportunity for laying of flowers and naming of orphan girls by their descendants.

    This FREE event is an opportunity to pay tribute to our Irish forebears, with stories, music and song.  No bookings required.

    RELATED EVENT:  Roundtable:  The Famine and Irish Australia,
    Williamstown Town Hall, 5pm

    Over 4000 young Irish women and girls travelled from the workhouses of Ireland between 1848 and 1850 under the Earl Grey Scheme, in search of hope and a new beginnin.  The Famine Rock at Williamstown commemorates their arrival.
